My 2006 XT has a newish new habit. After driving for a while when all is fine, an annoying rattle puts in an appearance at around 2000 rpm. At idle nothing above 2000 also nothing. Car goes like it always has, no smoking no other weird noises. I had a look on the internet and apparently it may be a heat shield that decides to rattle when it feels like it.

Had the XT at an exhaust shop checked all the shields, one was touching slightly - so they bent it back and corrected the back box

Is it still doing it?
I had the car at the panelbeaters recently and the morons used the brackets on the Front differential member as jacking points and the bent them. So maybe check this? They are triangular (trapezoidal) shaped brackets under the rear doors.

I have the exact same on mine. It wasnt the heat shields either. Mine is very intermittent though, when I try and let the mechanic hear it the car behaves perfectly...

I had same thing on my previous 04 impreza wagon, rattle vibration was at 2500rpm but only when the revs decended,  never when revving up, exhaust shop jacked it up and the guy could push the heat shield with a rubber hammer handle and noise disappeared, then let go and noise happens again. The solution, they removed heatshield and told me not to park on dry tall grass  :o

Sound never returned though

I'll bent the shield back but I doubt whether it stays bent. Will check it again.

Hehehehehe! Removed anything and everything that even looked as if it was remotely loose, replaced the airflow meter, threatened it with big hammer, something worked, it has been quiet for 250km even when driving like a complete hooligan. Honestly don't know which one it was.

I had a rattle(drone) at the rear of the car, especially when "abouring" up a hill at a certian revs.

After fitting my towbar, i had to "adjust" the rear silencer position slightly., by means of crowbar.....
Rattle gone :D
I assume it was a loose baffle in the rear box.
