I'm staying in Somerset West for the next two weeks and am looking for a nice day out for the weekend.  I was thinking of a drive up Matroosberg.
Any advice on that or other suggestions?

There was a write-up a while ago on this Forum, probably under trip reports.

I've not been up there, but i hear it's like going to the mall. Everyone's there.
Personally, not my cup of coffee(tea).
But it's probably the best to see snow?

What about something like Swartberg Pass/Sutherland/Prince Albert/Cederberg.....
All depends how far you want to drive.

Trying to get away from the mall.  Maybe a drive to die koue bokkeveld can be a plan.  But it is becoming quite far.

If you are not determined to find snow, then a relaxed 4 passes cruise will be very nice as well.

Last year me and MikeR did a nice trip around the coast to Botrivier, then did Van der Stel pass and thereafter a a beautiful pass to Kaaimansgat, you might even see some snow not too far away, we then came back over Franschoek pass and Helshoogte.
Very nice trip from Somerset West!

You wont be able to go up matroosberg in a forester. They have a 4x2 track, which is pretty when there is snow.

Alternatively, take a drive through the Cederberg through Wupperthal and onto Clanwilliam.

Thanks for all the input.  The Botrivier, vd Stel, Kaaimansgat drive sounds like a nice option.  Checking up on Matroosberg, I don't think it's a good idea given that I'm about to sell my car. :(

I haven't driven all the way through Kogelberg Nature Reserve before. We did part of that a couple of years back - there had been some serious rain and there were scary wash-aways.

You should return via Franchhoek Pass and Helshoogte to Stellenbosch.

Depending on timing - the place for lunch is The Shuntin' Shed in Botrivier.

Another possibility for a quick play is the 4x4 trail at Klein Helderberg.

Hi Sdup that will be a nice trip. Keen to drive through Kogelberg after this Friday's rain and sure to see snow at Kaaimansgat. When are you thinking of doing it - might be able to join you.
Regards
Mike

Now that looks good!
Kogelberg might be closed due to rain, but you should be able to phone them.

I am jealous!

Likewise, only saw your message this morning, so too late. Phoned /Kogelberg Nature Reserve office and the lady said there is no jeep track through the park, however if you check out Google Earth there is a track but it probably has locked gates on it. Anyway, let us know if you made it through the park and next time you are in town .....

There is a track that comes out at Arabella golf estate.
I do not think it is maintained and I doubt even fairly serious 4x4 will get through.
I did a mtb cycle from Arabella to Kleinmond about 5 years ago, and even then there was a lot of sections of tweespoor track that had washed away on the one side.
