So, after the girlfriend plied me with G&T and abused me for 90 seconds or so, I took her home because she refused to watch Top Gear reruns with me.

Before turning left onto my road home, I shifted into 1 and floored it with the power button on. Took her to 110 slowly(the car) shifting up to 3rd in about 800 metres. Turning into my driveway I got hit with a burning oil smell.

Anyone had this before? She's been purring all week even with the A/C in the high heat, sometimes idling for 20 mins while waiting for girlfriend shopping.

 I agree.
Often the oil burning smell is CV Grease spat onto the exhaust.
Check RH Inner CV boot urgently.
Can also be valve cover gasket leaking oil.

CV boot perished?

I'm hoping not. Had them replaced under warranty in CT before I left for Durbs 3 months ago. Will check and let you know.

It was the CV boot. RH inner, torn where the strap was. The LH inner was also on its way out due to the steel band been tightened too much.

This is the 3RD time they have been done after having work done by Driveshaft Centre in PEiland. I had this shop in Durban replace LH and RH inner boots.

After calling A-----  from DCentre THREE times, promising to call me back, I had to get stern. Especially after charging R7,700 for prop and front driveshafts replacement.

This is not acceptable as I had to pay R600 for new boots and now have to fight to get my money back!

My apologies for ranting. You sometimes like to think that you get what you pay for. What's scary is that this shop in PEiland does most of the work for SSA CT.

How many Subaru's are driving around with split CV boots in CT?

Boots from Subaru will last 4 to 5 years if the heat shield around down pipe is in tact.
I have imported neoprene boots from JRK in UK. The small side can stretch to go over CV.(if you don`t need to strip) Have them going for 4 years . still no sign of cracking.
You got to find someone to clean and packed them with great care. If he care less it will cost you a drive shaft as you don`t get the inner joint separately.
The outer joint is available after market.
