Didn't think of that one yet.
Bitch to get to during rain though. Unless it's for summer storage.

The retractable cargo cover fits into that compartment.

Are you sure? It looks way longer than the compartment.

The retractable cover only fits over the spare wheel if you have a space saver.

You can use that compartment for anything you like. Medkit. Tyrefix. Shotgun. RPG (mini one ,ofcourse) etc.

But why the odd shape?
Thought it might be snow chains or something.
Cargo cover won't fit.
Maybe telescopic golf clubs? :)
I've even asked at SSA, but could not get an answer.

I'm almost certain I read in the manual it's a rifle compartment, may have been dreaming though. [emoji3]

See about 3/4 way down:
http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f72/cloneable-forrester-tpms-sensors-121904/

I read thru a linked thread from that one, and over a span of 8 years there was no "real" answer.
Guns/fishing rods/tent poles/ tools/......, but nothing official

Same idea as Bravofox & Speedy.

The  ??? remains. Nobody from SSA cares to comment?

Mine would also fit, with the help of a cut-off grinder.

The cover fits on the "window sill". The compartment is between the shocks, which is a lot smaller than the cover.

The cover does fit further back, above the "Marie-biscuit" spare, if you had such a thing.

The mystery still continues.
