so we have been pulling apart a buddys SH today as the rear suspension felt like it was bouncing all over, he recently bought the car from JHB and we are doing some work on it.  after pulling out the rear struts they do not have the canisters on them and appear to be normal x struts and seem to still be ok, if a little soft, I am wondering if the previous owner may have done a cheap job and just fitted the sls spring on normal struts, causing the bouncing, how would i tell the difference?

There's normally a colour marking on the spring, which probably does not last forever.
Mine, having been changed to Non-SLS, have a blue mark near the bottom.
I cannot recall what the SLS springs had.
Maybe somebody with stock setup can comment?

When you say bouncing are you comparing it to your car? (If yours is an SG) I have a SH with non sls fitted and the car is bouncy. In fact the ride in the SH is pretty poor in comparison.

You can do whatever you like. The ride of an SH will never be as good as that of an SG. My SG did 160 000 km on its original SLS before I sold it. I am now on a specialist setup after replacing the SLS at 20 000km with non SLS. Still not a patch to my old 2003 SG.

no SG's, we both have SH xt's and I have an SH xs to compare to, when you go over a bump the back springs up and down for a few seconds, yes its different from sg, SH was supposed to be more suv where sg is based on wrx, the handling is not the issue here, the rear struts are not sls struts, but I am not convinced the springs have been changed for non sls.

My Pedders set up solved that issue. Even when I changed to non SLS it was still not completely stable. And yes they did change the springs in Bloemfontein when they fitted the non SLS.

Yeah mine had Nom SLS on the rear and STI sway bar, smooth road it handles well but throw a slight bump in it and it gets unsettled quickly.

Here are a few pics of the suspension from a 2010 SH.
There are no front springs
The colour of the strips on the rear SLS springs are pink.
