Good day All

I am new to this forum, I hope to get some help and advice to figure out what is wrong with my darling Outback.

I have a 2005 Outback 2.5i with 170 000kms, and mint service history. About two weeks ago I left for work and noticed that the car is seriously low on power. She would shift normally from 1st to 2nd gear and then will struggle to rev from 3-4000rpm. She would still accelerate and go through to 4th, but acceleration is very sluggish and climbing hills was a problem. She was perfectly fine the previous day, and the engine would still rev normally in neutral.

I took her in to our local Subaru agent, who plugged her into the diagnostics but could not find any problems. They told me that the gearbox has kicked the bucket, I was not convinced. I took her to a gearbox specialist, who also could not find any faults on the diagnostics. We then thought it could be something wrong with the fuel supply, and took her to two different auto electricians, also could not find anything.

So now she is back at the gearbox specialist, to drop the gearbox for inspection. I have tried to find the problem online, but there are so many variables. My suspicions are: duty solenoid, O2 sensor, lambda sensor, knock sensor.......
The warning display shows no errors though, so I do not know where to start.

I apologise to introduce myself this way, but I am desperate to have her fixed. I hope to gain some enlightenment from the good members on this forum.

Welcome!

This is the issue with cars. No real mechanics anymore.
At least you will have eliminated gearbox, but sounds like an engine issue being starved of air\fuel.
Where you based? How handy are you?

I would do the following.
Reset ECU by disconnecting battery (always my first port of call)
Check Air filter, clean MAF sensor.
Check brakes arent binding.
Remove and clean O2 sensor and see if you can have it tested.
Run the car as low as possible and put new fuel in from a different petrol station.
Test\Change fuel filter (check you service books but maybe its faulty)

Hi Thebus

Thank you for the welcoming.

The air/fuel issue still makes the most sense to me. I am pretty handy, I will definitely follow your instructions. I am just not sure where the MAF and O2 sensors are located, I will probably be able to find a schematic on the net?

This is costing me a shed load already, and no one has picked up the problem yet. It is ridiculous.

I appreciate your advice.

It should be a unit on the airbox. 2 nuts if a I remember correctly.
I had a golf 4 that no one could fix. After a large sum of money I decided with my head and not my heart to get rid of it.

Great, thank you! That will help alot!

I am also thinking of what will I do if the issue cannot be sorted out. I will invest to have her fixed, but now it seems it is not that simple, and I will not get much for a car with a mysterious problem.

I am going to gave a go at your recommendations and will post the results.

It may have a MAP, not a MAF. NA Foresters of that generation do. In which case it's by the throttle body, IIRC.

Could also be a clogged CAT.

Thank you for the advice guys.

A clogged CAT is also on my suspect list. I will keep this post updated, I am waiting for feedback from the workshop.

So it seems like my gearbox has wrecked itself. The gearbox specialist says that the clutches are badly burned. The repairs to overhaul the box is R53 000!!!
I cannot for the life of me afford that at the moment, I am getting married in 2 weeks.

So at the moment I am considering a 2nd hand box. Can you guys give me some reliable contacts?

Was that the 4EAT? They're meant to be so strong! Anyway, did the guy give a reason for the problem? Low ATF, old ATF, what? Boxes don't just die for no reason.

You must get your priorities in order here.

Try contact Scoobyworx in Kemptin Park.
They have repaired a number of blokes gearboxes recently at good prices.
Or try RSI Autobody for a second hand one?
They in Zwartkops

Yes it is the 4EAT gearbox, I also understand that they are very reliable. Unfortunately the valve body failed on mine  and damaged several components. I just had a look at the parts and must say much of it still looks fine to me.

I wonder if I just replace the valve body, if it will be solved? I guess it is impossible to predict.
