Hi all.

A friend of mine popped his head gaskets while loaded and towing. It's an 06 2.5XS. He didn't notice anything wrong until "something smelled like it was burning". I went to collect everyone and we left the Forrie with a mechanic in Swellendam. He called this week and said the motor is gaar, time to find a secondhand long-block.

So two questions:

1. Anyone know of a long block for sale?
2. Are the short block, crank and heads normally damaged, or can one tear it all down, replace bearings and get another 100k km?

Thanks for any advice.

With the help of Dr. Google, I now also know the diff between short & long block.
Always thought it was a different type of block(engine)  ::) ::)

Should be repairable, but not cheap unless you import some parts and do some work yourself.

Bore cylinders, grind crank. Oversize pistons and undersize bearings. Head should be ok, might do with a recon.

I went the above route because then you know what you have in the end. Cost me about R20k doing assembly myself, but outsourcing machining.

Might be cheaper to get a secondhand motor.

Bad news. Even lately guys want stupid money for these beetle engines.

Im guessing about 12k minimum , but in reality closer to R15-20k

Dr. Google:
"A short-block is just a block with crankshaft, rods and pistons. A long-block adds heads, camshaft and valve train, head covers, water pump, oil pump, oil pan and a few other parts"

Short Block

Long Block (in this case with DOHC, not SOHC as per SG9 N/A
Long blocks can sometimes also have manifolds/.....

Eisch, this Dr Google is a clever guy  :D :D :D :D

Thanks for the explanation!

I would suggest Turbo Toys in Boksburg. They had several complete motors in their store, the last time I was there...

Im really think you should become an agent for parts and services with the prices you pay. There is no way I could get that kind of work done for that money. Reality is I would end up paying R25k to get it up and running to OEM.
