Good morning gentlemen,

I'm a keen first time Forester buyer ( sold my 1987 Cruiser SW so shows you how serious I am to convert  ;) ) and looking for a 2006-2007 XS auto with roughly 150,000 - 170,000 km on the clock, any feedback on the auto gearboxes and their reliability?

- What to look out for when before buying?
- I see overhauls cost about R40k?

Afaik the 4EAT is pretty bullet-proof. The only guys I've read of who change anything are the XT guys who mod for big power. Then they update the valve body on the box.

Only if you don't do your homework and don't shop around. :)

Either way, they can and do go wrong but I don't think it's the norm. Check the fluid, it should not smell burnt and should have a bright(ish) red look to it.
Also listen to strange or whining sounds on acceleration and/or deceleration.

Then the less obvious thing - check the tyres. They should be evenly worn, if not the center diff would have been working overtime to compensate and may have burn/worn clutch packs.
