went to alberton to test drive a grey forester xt 2008 manual today (117000km)
need help on finding out if it could be a lemon
the clutch was pretty heavy
there where a few dings and scratches (aceptable)
the front bumper was resprayed
interion was clean
engine bay was clean and no funny noises
had lots of power (stock)

overall i was very impressed with the car
the car is no longer for sale (sorting out cash tomorrow to buy it)  (so its pretty much mine already )
the front bumper was resprayed and im scared the car is a salvage
its a pretty large dealership that was very professional so i dont think they would rip me off

maybe i should take it for an inspection before buying
please give me some advice

You can do a lot of inspection yourself:
Check underneath (lie on your back), and:
check the front cross member under the radiator. Scratches are normal, but it should not be distorted/bent. Same for the subframe under the engine........
check the undercarriage of the car for serious dent/damage (slipping over rocks/high pavements/....)
check engine/gearbox for oil leaks
check CV boots
check shocks for OEM / Oil leaks

Check if aircon works
Check for traces of oil in radiator system

The Forester clutches are not for for the "light footed", you have to eat your porridge in the morning (that's my experience)

Get confirmation that the air bag system works, and that all bags are intact.

Do the door windows have a logo printed on them that looks like a boomerang, within a circle (OEM). If not, ask why.
Do the rear side windows have the "Symetrical AWD" stickers?
Does the LH rear side window have the Arial?

If the engine/gearbox are VERY clean, ask why. Normally there should be some dust/dirt. Nobody steamcleans a gearbox.... unless it was taken out of the car......

There is a lot you can see that will a story, even if you are not a "petrolhead".

If you need an "official" opinion, you should got to the AA.

Good luck.

Front bumper could be resprayed due to stone chips. If you can, check in the service book if the previous owner filled in his details, and ask him. As Berdp said, you can check underneath for damage to the frame, but the plastic tray underneath covers alot, so ideally it needs to come off.
XT clutches are usually heavy, but they say it gets heavier when worn out.
If the car has a service record with dealers, they will be able to check when the clutch was replaced. Also try to find out if the radiator was replaced and if the cambelt service was done.
If the dealer objects to any checks like these, rather walk away.

Had a chat with justin just now, Bud buy that fozzie :) No issues mechanical wise. That mileage is legit too, he bought her when she had 72k on the clock. Serviced every 8k Kms ever since. Cam belt/diff oil etc was done too with the major service. Oh he said she needs new plugs asap tho and an oil/oil filter replacement at 120k.
