Hi all

I took the Foz in for it's 120k service and asked that they have a look (listen) at the toc toc sound.

http://foresterforum.co.za/index.php/topic,3460.0.html

Their feedback was that it was the outer CV joints making the noise and that it already had a bit of damage on. Their solution to this is, to replace the drive shafts. This will cost R18 000. R17 200 parts, R800 labour.

"vehicle came in for knocking noise it was found that the cv joints noisy drive shafts to be replaced as the cv joint and the drive shaft is one unit to be replaced."

I took out an extended warranty and service plan. The extended warranty only covers R8000 :o

Now I am definitely NOT one of those guys that complains and fights everyone for every conceivable reason. I only stand my ground when it is warranted and I am being taken advantage of.

So my question is, is this way things are? Do I pay the excess and replace the parts at Subaru? Or is their a better, maybe even cheaper, way of doing things?

Looking forward to your advise!

That price will be for both front driveshafts. Are both busted?

If they REALLY need to be replaced, rather get them from Rockauto or Ebay.

That. I got mine off eBay (cardone ones) and they've worked well so far. R2k and a bit each, landed.

Yup, for both. No idea if they are busted, I heard a toc toc sound, took it in, and they said it was the 'outer CV joints' and that the driveshafts had to be replaced, that's all I know, I won't know if it is really necessary...

I prefer that someone that knows more than I do, get the parts and replace or fix it. I am known amongst my friends as the one you do NOT give a spanner too... I also once bought the wrong battery for my bike, Dakkie, twice in a row... and connected it the wrong way round... sooo.... If this is what is needed, do you have any suggestions whom I can approach?

My real questions are,

- do I get a second opinion of what is actually wrong with the car and if a total part replacement is necessary? and if so, who will I take it to to get this opinion?

- dealerships replaces parts, they do not fix things, is it worth it to find someone that can fix the outer CV joints like you would with other cars that have CV joint problems? or do I just go the dealership route and replace the entire thing?

I would take it to a place like Drivelines, or a recognised CV specialist and ask them to have a look. They'll probably whistle, the all too well-known mechanic's whistle when they see a Scoobie, but get their opinion anyway...

What is a mechanics whistle? That typical whistle that says "here's big shit"?

Hi @PietSkiet

I had my front outer CV's replaced on my 2004 Fozzie XS (see http://foresterforum.co.za/index.php/topic,3381.msg35657.html#msg35657), by Auto Station in Belville, CT. Manufactured by SAJCO.

Really good price, good service.

Good luck ;-)

That's the one! It's normally accompanied straight after by: "Nee meneer, die goed kry jy net by die agents...!"

I contacted my extended warranty provider and they said as long as it is done at a RMI accredited member they will cover it.

https://www.rmi.org.za/find-accredited-members/

I spoke to CV Masters in Pretoria and they said R480 to have a look and then approximately R1500 a side. I will still give Subaru the opportunity by telling them you either make a plan and get R8000 or R0 by forcing me to go somewhere else if you cannot help.
