Hi all, I bought my first Subaru Forester (2014) which i still own. I like the vehicle but whats stopping me from loving it lately is that for the past 9 months it has picked up a knocking sound when i make right turns (probably about 60% of the time that i do a right turn). It started when it was still under maintenance plan, and i took it in twice to the dealership for this issue but they had no idea what it could be and hadnt heard of the problem before. So needless to say the problem still exists and its out of maintenance plan. Has anyone ever had this? I have made a recording of it. It sounds like a metal knock/tapping. Any advice would be appreciated. Also, can anyone recommend a good place to service a forester in Pretoria (not the dealership)? Thanks Gerard

Knocking when turning very sharp can be CV related. Do the rate of knocking increase when you accelerate in the turn? If you reported it to Subaru while it was under Maintenance Plan they should sort it out even though you are out of your 36 months. Contact Subaru SA Head Office and ask to speak to the technical manager.

Could also be a bearing issue. Very noticeable when turning and accelerating

I have a similar challenge on my 2010 X.

Solutions tested:
- swapped drive shafts @ 90 000km - no change
- new tyres  - somewhat better
- new suspension bushes @ 105 000km - better for a while but back after about 5000k's

I will watch this thread with "shared" interest.

Had similar issue - turned out to be outer CV's.  Subarou however will only sell the entire side-shaft at around R7,500+VAT and + fitting.
Wheel bearings you should be ablt to hear by just steering slightly to either side while driving.
(Outer) CV testing normally done in a suitable space like a parking lot: drive slowly, turn to full lock, keep the speed and apply left foot braking for a bit - LIGHTLY!  Swap sides. Normally the left side complains when turning left and vice versa.
Current: S-edition 2011 Steel Silver (S-exy young thing) - Forged, Chett tjooned, 76mm s/s wrapped DP, King Springs, 225/60/17 G012s, Sump & AT guards, cheap mud flaps, HID fogs, LED parks.
Ex:        2.5X man 2010 Pearl White (Dirty Girl) - LSS lift, 235/60/16 G012s, Sump guard, HIDs and more..

Hi all,

I also have a knocking noise. I could describe it as more of a "toc-toc-toc" sound that accelerates when I do. Recently it started to make a "clack" sound when I turn too. I asked here on this forum plus phoned a few people. The consensus seems to be that the knocking sound, especially if it happens when turning, is CV related.

I asked Subaru Centurion to have a look when they serviced my car. They said it was the outer CV joints that has a bit of damage, causing this noise. They wanted to replace both the CV's AND the drive train, as it is one piece for a dealership, and they don't fix parts, only replace them. It came to R18k and my extended warranty only covers R8k for CV's...

As it was not critical to replace immediately, I decided to wait and go to a CV specialist. This will happen today. I will let you know if the knocking sound disappears or not.

Refrain from turn right  :o :o

Not that bad.
 Is your vehicle lifted? Km's?
Just curious as it is a relatively new model (2012).

Hi jbh

It is an Subaru SA special addition, the Africa 20, which was fitted with raisers by Subaru SA. I bought it at 111 000km and according to Subaru Centurion it had one previous owner, an older couple, so I doubt the car was put through unusual strain. It does seem a bit soon and I saw somewhere that it might be caused by raisers, but.. It just looks so damn cool with the raisers...

So I will put some money aside to change them in another 100 000 km ::)
