Except mine didn't " leave in a cloud of smoke and horrible metal munching noises"    ;)

Sorry to hear that man.
Closest to you is probably WRC if you arent going to do it yourself.
I heard from another guy here at work about  http://www.kyotoracing.co.za/
They do Subaru's, Mitsubishi's and Nissan GTR's.

Yes I understand yours didn't fail catastrophically, but I think it was the same problem, you just did something about it in time. The invoice from Sub for your job was very decently priced, might even be better than WRC? I spoke to Hylton sometime and he mentioned R8.5k for a clutch jobbie.

I've managed to borrow a Alfa 155 as a run-about while the Foz is out of action, so I'm getting very keen to do it myself and learn in the process.

But remember, My clutch started giving problems after they did the gearbox synco's

So nothing actually broke and Subaru offered to pay for it.
Im sure if I had pay, the list might have been a little different.

All I know about change a clutch is using a broomstick to align everything.
I dont think I should ever try replacing a clutch

Gearbox is out!!!

Was quite a mission getting it off the engine, was pretty stuck. Had to quickly weld up a bracket to brace the engine to the chassis, as the engine was just moving with the gearbox when I tried loosening it.

The offending release bearing:

Very much stuffed up:

Luckily its already got a single-mass flywheel, so I don't have to replace that. Gave it in for a skim this morning.

Going to replace the clutch plate and pressure plate as well. Didn't intend to, but the pressure plate has some damage.

Forester chilling out:

Should make good progress on getting it all together this weekend, but I'm going to take my time and do it properly. Will give cost breakdowns once I'm finished.

Very nice animation here, on page 2:

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/clutch1.htm

They call it a "throw out bearing" there.

It allows the static clutch lever to press down on the spinning/moving pressure plate.

The Foz lives!!! Took me 10 hours minus a braaitjie but everything is together and it works. Hopefully no leaks show up.

Flywheel skimmed and new pilot bearing installed:

New release bearing, gearbox ready to be fitted:

Flywheel, new clutch plate and pressure plate installed and aligned (by eye):

Another one:

This one is for you Manfred, throttle body cleaned (minus the R250  ;D  ):

I've changed the front brake pads and disconnected the front sway bar while the wheels were of. Dodgy body roll to say the least!

Now the garage floor needs some Jayes Fluid, everything smells like burnt plastic and gearbox oil.

Man what a mission, but what a car! Will give a cost break down soon.

Clutch plate: R1600
Pressure plate: R1770
Pilot bearing: R100
Release bearing: R400
Castrol EPX 80W-90: R225
Flywheel skim: R200

Total: R4295 for a new clutch. Eina, could have almost bought new tyres for the Foz.

Congrats.

The whole Flywheel, clutch plate and pressure plate alignment thing, if it isnt right, you will know about it right..?

Youve gotto show me that one Pieter.
My TB is still getting stuck.
Not just with Idling.
If I 'DRIVE' the car, then press the clutch in, it revs at about 3500 rpm.
Let the clutch out and then back in and it goes down like normal.

Yep, you wont be able to get the gearbox back on if it is not aligned. The gearbox input shaft splines goes into the clutch friction plate and then into the flywheel pilot bearing. Does not need to be spot on, the first time you press the clutch pedal everything aligns itself as long as its in.

Not a mission at all, If you bring your Foz one Sat or Sun morning I'll show you how. Just buy a good quality carb cleaner.

Don't think brake cleaner is the same but speaking under correction.

Wynns carb cleaner will do just fine.
