« on: December 06, 2018, 07:50:56 AM »
Does anyone have the procedure for the post CAT removal sensor "fooler"?

Electronics / SH heat gauge
« on: June 28, 2018, 10:54:16 AM »
Has anybody here ever built a heat gauge into an SH? I just had to have my engine overhauled, after a radiator cracked and I blew both head gaskets because when the red light to indicate overheating came on, it was too late!

Turbo Tech Chat / O2 Sensor
« on: October 18, 2017, 03:05:14 PM »
My rear downsteam O2 sensor has packed up, causing the engine light and speed control lights to flash and giving P0037 code. I've been told by Chett that it's not essential and I can either replace at vast cost, or delete the O2 sensor group of codes. Can anyone please advise how this is done? He (Chett) offered to assist if I brought the car to him, but my car is in Kimberley and I'm in Qatar...

General Chat / Rockauto
« on: September 19, 2017, 09:49:26 PM »
Some advice from the guys that regularly order from Rockauto. I ordered my timing belt kit and spark plugs from them recently. The parcel was sent via DHL and tracking done throughout. I've just received a message that the parcel had arrived in SA, but delayed at customs. Is this normal?

Turbo Tech Chat / Forester SH timing belt kit and water pump.
« on: September 07, 2017, 10:45:15 AM »
Could anybody please recommend a reliable supplier, other than Subaru dealers, of these (seemingly, rocking horse crap, made of gold) items in South Africa? I'm almost 100% sure I've read somewhere on this very forum, that Alert Engine Parts, stocked these. Just spoke to two different branches and it's as if I was asking for a flux capacitor for a 1982 De Lorean... computer says "no"! N They get to the point where it lists EJ engine, 169kW and that's where their computer's knowledge ends...

Problem is, I'm sitting in Qatar, the car is in Kimberley at a workshop, so I'm not really able to do much searching for parts, other than the internet and the odd phone call....

In Kimberley, the word Subaru is not commonly heard, with the parts salesmen giving the all too well known whistle and "nee meneer, daai goed kry jy net by die dealers..." when asked!
Some assistance would be highly valued!

Transmission / Foz SH XT Release bearing failure under 100K Km?
« on: July 25, 2017, 03:44:51 PM »
So, I'm in, for what looks like ZAR12K plus, after my release bearing spectacularly failed and chewed my drive shaft sleeve to bits...! The clutch assembly was installed at the 100K service, as per the job card I received from Subaru Pietermaritzburg, when I bought the car. Apparently clutch and pressure plate assembly was still fine, as I'm not an abuser of clutches...

Does anyone know of this happening? Can anyone perhaps relate to the same experience? I'm having serious doubts on the quality of the kit installed...

Wheels, Tires and Brakes. / Lower control arm ball joint rubber
« on: May 01, 2017, 01:20:09 PM »
Wow, a mouth full!

I was wondering if there's a way to replace the lower control arm, (wheel side) rubber, without removing it from the suspension? I noticed mine has perished and needs to be replaced.

General Chat / Subaru Forester in Qatar
« on: May 01, 2017, 09:21:06 AM »
Recently accepted a position in Qatar and moved here in April. My position includes a vehicle and naturally I was drawn to the Subaru dealership floor! Interestingly they sell Impreza, WRX & STi and N/A, Outback, Legacy and Forester, but only N/A....and nothing diesel, as diesel is a swearword here... only "bakkies" tractors, construction equipment and trucks use diesel!

There are 3 Forester models here, all are naturally aspirated, automatic and relatively fully loaded. Only real difference amongst them are toys...i.e. adaptive lighting, leather interior, motorized tailgates, massive sunroof, bi-xenon, 17 or 18" wheels, reverse camera, touchscreen ICE with many speakers and nav, etc. I took the top of the range for a drive and was quite impressed by the gearbox responsiveness with the paddle shifts, handling and comfortable seats, but coming from an XT, I've been hopelessly corrupted by power and sadly, even the uprated N/A motors, are very sluggish! I really wish I could get a new XT here, but the only turbo available is the WRX...which would not do well in the dunes, I would imagine! Therefore, I am forced to choose the next best thing....Mitsubishi Pajero 3.8 with HK sound and the works... All the vehicles here are very highly spec'd and mostly auto. Lots of American V8 and other types of gas guzzlers... I suppose at the equivalent of ZAR5.97/Liter of fuel (less if you are a Qatari citizen) fuel consumption makes no difference to your life! Also driving on the "wrong" side of the road, quite unsettling going into a circle the wrong way around...!!!

Incidentally a friend has  just bought an American pickup, Shelby engined Raptor truck, based on a Ford F150 Raptor, equipped with a 770HP muscle V8...Man this thing kicks you in the arse! Will tyre squeal at every gear change and you can smoke the tyres at half throttle!

Electronics / SH Standard battery
« on: March 06, 2017, 12:20:14 PM »
I searched and found a topic 2 years ago regarding battery on SH, but no specification. Could someone please advise the correct model number, or size for the Forester XT SH? Mine has a non standard battery fitted, which needs replacement now.

Wheels, Tires and Brakes. / Tread101, Randburg
« on: November 25, 2015, 12:39:49 PM »
Has anyone had any dealings with these fellows? Got some good priced quotes from them for a new set of tyres, but not too sure of their service. Imported "premium brand" 225/55 x 17 for around R1,000.00... I was assured that it's not Chinese, or Indian scrap and apparently carries the same warranty as any tyre...

General Chat / Wiper Blades
« on: August 21, 2015, 01:33:04 PM »
I searched the topic and found the last time this was discussed, was way back in May 2013. So to refresh, I have a question. OEM blades seem ridiculously expensive and since I'm living in the East Rand now, I seem to be extremely far from the nearest dealer. I need to replace my wipers, but don't want the generic RAM, Champion, or other metal things, as they lift at 100KM/H, due to the rake of the Subaru winscreen and you might as well not have wipers! The OEM ones are excellent and at home in the little old PE, I would be able to visit my nearest Midas and buy the rubber inserts to fit into the holders at dirt cheap. People at the Midas here look at me funny when I ask for those and refer me to Game & Makro to get Durablades (Off the market, by the way!)

What do you guys in Gauteng fit?

Electronics / HID Fog light install
« on: January 28, 2015, 10:37:25 PM »
I rece tly swapped out my old, yellow incandecent fogs, to HID balasts and globes. The difference is amazing and I'm very happy with the result! R690.00 well spent!

Before and after pics taken in daylight shows quite clearly how much brighter HID is...

General Chat / Oil leak
« on: January 19, 2015, 07:59:59 AM »
My car started a very annoying habit this weekend! It has decided to take a pee on the paving, everywhere I stop...

I have not had a chance to take the belly Tupperware off, to see where it is coming from, but before I do, would anyone possibly know where it is likely to come from? I am really jittery to take it to the dealership (unknown entity to me, in a strange city), but ultimately if it is something serious I suppose I would have to... :-\

Secondly, if the inevitable does occur, where do I take it in the East Rand (Boksburg) area?
