Electronics / Drivers window switch

So the dreaded drivers window switch has been bugging me for about a year. For those that are not familiar with this curse in a Forester, it is when the window winds up and the AUTO function does not disengage. This causes the motor to heat up and eventually burn out, resulting in a huge bill for a new one, and sometimes that one will pack up shortly after due to the switch not being replaced.

The cause of all this is due to the rocker assembly loosing a TINY bit of plastic off of the curved face where it engages two roller bearings on springs.

The solution was first presented to me by Veneficus on the forum quite some time ago. But I was a bit puzzled how one got the rocker switch off the switch assembly. This solution was provided by 180Foz on the forum.

So essentially one must remove the whole unit and remove the FRONT roller bearing and spring. Put the whole thing back together again and everything works just fine.

As some of you know, I am in the process of rebuilding Blue Wasabi yet again.
Feb was my last build due to a failed fuel pump and running lean on cylinder three. So I elected to pull everything off the car and rebuild bearings and Weseco 100mm pistons.

Two weeks ago I went to RedStar Raceway and was wearing some semi slicks. At the end of the long back straight my bearings ran and number 4 spun. I have been very confused how this happened and have been making up various hypotheses. One of which was oil starvation due to high G forces.
You can see the last corner at around 07:40 and at the end of the straight the bearing lets go.

BUT, I took my catch can apart to clean it and found it full, and I mean full of beach sand.

In December last year I went to the coast and did a bit of dune driving. And 1000km of dirt driving. My catch can vents to atmosphere under my front cross member behind the front wheel.  My Theory?
December last year sand got sucked into the catch can under vacuum. Collected in the can.
Oil pump could handle a bit of sand and the filter would take care of the rest. Most of the sand would have sat in the catch can.
September this year. A vigorous drive with a lot of boost and vacuum with some blow by and hot oil and the sand is dislodged in the catch can and ends up in the oil pump. There it impedes the pressure relief valve and the valve is stuck open. When I hit the end of the main straight and geared down to 4th, the pump could not keep oil pressure as the valve is now open and number 4 ran, and subsequently spun.  The rest of the bearings followed suite when I drove the car round to the pit exit to get off the track.
So there are a number of different options for catch can installation and in my mind one should really have two, keeping the heads separate from the crank. Also, venting to atmosphere seems pretty daft in hind site, especially considering the Forester does spend quite a bit of time in a dirty environment off road. And it is probably not good for the polar bears.

So now I face another R25k rebuild because of an incorrectly installed catch can.

So I sit here.
At my fisherman's cottage. And I ponder.
This car.
This hunk of metal and plastic.
I have, to date, done 2500 km. 600 of which have been on some fantastic Cape gravel roads.
I have done the Swartberg Pass (bucket list) and others. I have driven in dunes. Killed a GTi through the twisties and rock crawled to a light house.
I am averaging 11l/100km and my average dirt speed is higher than my tar speed.

I have driven in sand, mud, dirt, tar and whatever else this beautiful country could put in my path.
I cannot think of a vehicle I have ever owned, or been in that has enabled me to have so much fun.
So I salute you, my Forester, my car.

Events & News / End of year braai

It has been suggested that we have a get together for the end of the year.
My wife and I are happy to host this event at our house. We can cater for quite a large crowd. Pool, bar, Jacuzzi.
The alternative is that we all meet at De Wildt ( http://www.dewildt4x4.co.za/ ) and the adventurous can do the trail. either way, we will then have a braai in the country.
Both have pro's and con's.
Please vote so that we can then post a date?

Trip Planning / Gauteng Fozzie visiting the Mother City

Greetings all.
So I am planning a recon to Cape Town in December with a view to possibly emigrating there from Gauteng in the near future.
So far I have booked a night stop in a National Park called Mokala National Park, between Kimberly and Hopetown on the N12.
Then we are off to Struisbaai for 7 days to enjoy the Cape Agulhas area. Might do the coastal road towards Cape Town for fun.
We then have a few days in Hout Bay and then it will be time to meander back to the Highveld.

The purpose of my post is to request that members chip in with the sights and frights in the two areas that are recommended, and those that should be avoided.
The Cape Town guys can please recommend some roads and tracks that we can drive in the fozzie?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Electronics / Cleaning the MAF on a SG9 CXT

So I used to use a Wynns product called MAF cleaner and it always did a good job. Now they do not make it anymore, and have started supplying a Carb/Intake type cleaner. It leaves a residue that I think is messing with my MAF sensor.
What do you guys use to clean the MAF in your cars?

Electronics / Head Unit Replacement

After owning a Subaru for the last 6 years I have finally become utterly disappointed in the OEM sound.
I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade for a number of reasons.
  • The head unit played CD's but they kept jumping.
  • The sound was woeful to say the least
  • There was no way of playing any of my M3P's
  • My Parrot car kit kept hijacking my sound
  • The sound was woeful to say the least

So I went for a Pioneer FH-X775BT and some 300W Kenwood fronts and some Pioneer 200W in the rear doors. I also popped a Sub under the front passenger seat http://www.autostyle.co.za/car-audio/car-subwoofers/audiobank-2200w-compact-sub-amplifier-kit.html

It took a while to figure out all the ins and outs of the cables and I have left everything in so if I wanted to I can return it to stock.
Well the difference in sound is unbelievable. I am so happy I could just..........
Anyway I have to say that I would recommend this excersise to anyone.
It plays all my music off my iPhone 5s and then some.
I fitted a switch into the fuse box controller in case I needed to switch off the sub whilst listening to talk radio.
My wife likes it too as the sub is under her seat, not mine ;D
And I pulled my parrot out as the radio has a better sound option. And everyone can here me.
I will put some pics up soon.

Wheels, Tires and Brakes. / STi Sway Bars fitted

So I am going to change the sway bars on my Fox to STi front and back and see what happens. Anybody got some advice and feedback?
Does it compromise off road capabilities drastically? Will one notice a big difference in cornering?

Right before Scooby fest and my Prop Shaft carrier bearing fails. Along with my cross member bushes. Bugger this is starting to look rediculous.
Anybody got some ideas here?
A new prop shaft is R9800 and the bushes are R550 per set. How do I get the old ones pressed out and new ones pressed in?
Second hand prop shaft might be on the cards.

Race Tales / BMW135i; C200K; Monster truck.

So I have not had a car with proper boost in over a month due to a little crash.
I had to do an install in Dainfern and we had a fun trip back along William Nicol and Republic road.
First we got tagged by an old Hilux with massive tyres and a HUGE Supercharged V8. The sound of this thing was immense!
We did not have too much trouble keeping ahead of this beast, but I was still very impressed by its abilities in a straight line. this is when a youngster in a C200k decided to join in and just spoiled it for everybody. Note to youngster: Never bring a knife to a gunfight. He got cleaned up by me AND the truck.
Turned right into Republic and a 135i sedan slotted into the right hand lane rather quickly and it was game on. Did a launch that worked out ok, not brilliant. 1st I had him, second he was by my side, third he started pulling away. Damn those cars are properly quick. One day it would be nice to give one a hiding.
The best part of it was the friendly waves and thumbs up we received and gave to the other drivers (except the Merc youngster).
It is good to be back.

Hi all. Just doing a quick survey as to what other people think looks good. I want to get my rims powdercoated and thought that changing colour might be a good idea.
So we have a charcoal/anthracite, white and a dark gold.

Which will look better?
My Photoshop skills need some attention I know.

Well last week Wednesday I tried to get into Rabie Street and to cut a short story even shorter, I got hit by a Honda Jazz.
The right front suspension has to be replaced.
I am trying to get the car to Greenstone Auto body so that I can see if they can have her done before Scooby Fest. :'( :'(

Trip Reports / Blue Wasabi in the passes. Eastern Cape

Just been down to the Knysna George area. Decided to take in as many passes as we could. Went up to Goudveld and across to George via The Seven Passes. It was really awesome. Mostly dirt and very slippery in the rain.

Yesterday we went on the "closed" road from Paradise Valley to Humaansdorp on the old R102. What an experience. At times the road sags down the slope and there are some real tight corners. So abandoned. And right in the gorge forests. Would do it again in a heart beat.

Me and my family were just messing around in the outskirts of Welkom in the Free State. It is amazing how much traction these cars have on dirt!
