Transmission / Front drive shaft/CV install - help needed pls
« on: March 15, 2018, 12:00:31 PM »
Hi guys
(Yes, I'm still around!  ::) )
Just received new shafts from Cardone.  The cuffs on the outer CVs are a bit bent - photo attached.
Is the shape of this cuff essential for proper fitting?  i.e. can we try bend it as straight as we can, or should I send them back?

Trip Planning / Shipwreck trail, early Jan 2018
« on: December 12, 2017, 09:14:51 AM »
Hey guys, wife & I planning to do the Shipwreck trail on the West coast early Jan (4th most likely, 3rd/5th are alternative options).  They need 4pax min, so we need two more peeps, as it's only us at the moment.  It's a self-drive and runs from Noup to Kleinzee, sand & rock trail along the beach for 37km.  Not usually open to the public unless on a tour like this. The operator indicates 4-5hrs, so leisurely drive. Some thickish sand along the way. I said I'm in a Foz and they don't have an issue.  I know of a guy who did it in an SG some years ago, so quite do-able.  He had a lift and oversized AT tyres though.  Wanted to know if anyone wants to join? Even if not in a Foz (in which case you could help me get out the dwang ;D)
pm me or preferably via WhatsApp, I'm on the forum WA group.

Tuning & Logging / UltraGauge Blue: BT dongle & phone app
« on: October 13, 2015, 09:48:37 PM »
Hey guys
Got a mail from UltraGauge the other day (since I bought one a while ago) - they've caught up a bit, so now they're offering a Bluetooth ODB2 dongle with phone app, so you get all the monitoring functionality on your phone.

I'm keen to get this, since mine got stolen a while ago and I've been looking at ELM327 & Torque app combo.
If anyone's alos keen, pm me, we could do a group buy.  I just want to do a quick comparo between the two options first.

Tutorials / westcoaster's SH Fog lamp removal/upgrade (eg HID)
« on: July 06, 2015, 02:49:21 PM »
howzit guys
I did this write-up as part of a series of tinkering while drinking beer in 2014.
Never posted it, so here goes eventually.
It focuses on the actual removal of the units.  If you need some guidance on the HID kit install, pls also look at my "SH HID install" tut - it's a sticky with downloadable PDF.

I hope it helps!

Trip Reports / Moz, May 2015
« on: June 06, 2015, 07:39:41 AM »
(follow-up from "hehe, jus' sayin'  in Trip Planning section :))

Pta Malongane in Southern Moz - same place we've been going to this time each year for the last 4.
Live Rock/Blues/Folk music at the beach for 3 days/4 nights.
For you who this may mean anything to, bands included:
Black Cat Bones, Gerald Clark, Guy Collins, Luna Paige, Josie Field & Laurie Levine, Blues Broers, Albert Frost, Crimson House, Ann Jangle and a host of others - also Piet Botha & Jack Hammer, who have been part of this from about 13 years ago.
The set-up includes semi-acoustic sessions on the beach pub deck around lunch time and a more "proper" open-air stage set at night, where you stand barefoot in shorts in the sand, or sit in your camping chair or on the cooler box  ;) to some rocking tunes.

We were 3 each in the sexy young thing and Dave's recently-bought XV, both fully loaded with camping gear, food & drinks, cooler boxes, fridge (and my surf & kiting gear of course).  The sand varies, but nothing too deep. We dropped the tyres to around 1.9, more for the hell of it. With the loads, the sidewalls did show the drop. The XV behaved impeccably, although she did scoop a fair bit of the 'middelmannetjie' along to Malongane. Dave was chuffed as hell and looked for excuses every day to drive out for ice, more  booze, bread, wood, anything  ;D

We didn't take any Foz (or much of any) pics, but had LOTS of beer, braai and R&R's.

Here are a few pics, some lifted from other people's pics on fb, to give you an idea (sorry , poor quality).
1st pic is on arrival, where we stopped for a few R&R's to welcome ourselves. XV & Foz parked in the back  8)
west can be seen in 3rd pic, parked on the floor against the speaker, during a Deboned (Bones semi-unplugged) session  8)

There were lots of pics from the same area in my previous Trip reports, especially last year, where we took a morning-long drive up the coast.

OK, so I'll start this.
Firstly, big up to the organisers, sponsors (esp SSA and Subaru Jhb), volunteers, RSR staff and the SOCSA crowd - great event!
Will post more later, the wife did get some footage - a lot of the Elise SC she REALLY wants, but also drags, skidpan and the mud fun pit  ;D

Race Tales / M6 (!!!)
« on: February 05, 2015, 04:40:05 PM »
Had a little "0-to-probably-over-the-speed-limit" with a late model M6 in Sandton this morning.
I was a bit slow on the pull off, probably 'coz I knew it was just a dream, but I made him work for it - pulled in behind him with a 2m gap when a taxi blocked my lane...
I think he and his mate were a bit surprised by the SUV with AT tyres and 230mm clearance...

General Chat / The best mod/fix I've done to my Foz
« on: October 20, 2014, 03:27:01 PM »
Just wanted to share this coz I'm SO chuffed with myself - but perhaps we can make a thread out of it anyway...

So the stupid rear hatch has had a rattle for a LONG time and it's been FREAKING me out, to put it very mildly.  Every weekend I keep forgetting and then Monday as I leave for work, it would just add insult to injury (yes, I think work as a concept is over-rated).  Yesterday after a few beers, the loosened synapses finally connected and I went looking for that sucker.
So I did this:
1. Number plate holder is fixed to the hatch in such a way that it allows the holder to rattle.  Stuck 3 short strips of foam tape to the back of the holder, along the bottom edge. Cost: about 30c.  Time: about 30mins, including finishing my beer and going to get another, plus drilling out and replacing the one pop rivet on the plate itself.
2. The catch/latch where the door lock catches onto - shifted that forward abt 2mm. Cost: R0.  Time: 2.5mins.

The result (the value of peace and quiet)?
