Title: My Foz 2.5xt Man
Post by: Alex on April 08, 2014, 02:27:56 PM
So I took delivery of this bad boy earlier this year. Coming from owning all sorts of cars, this was my first Subaru and I happened to find a beautiful condition forester for a good price so I couldn't help myself.

Owning a performance and general parts company I knew all to well that this was not gonna stay stock for too long. The whole style of the vehicle is perfect in my eyes, ride height of the stock shocks and springs does bother me somewhat but will be installing some ISC coils in our next order.

So far shes been a beautiful drive but I have picked up some silly issues like brake pads and rotors in the rear, as well as wheel bearings that were shot. The tell tail signs to this were the clanking noises heard going over rough roads:mad: With this all sorted I decided to get a set of my companies mats for the car as the standard ones were blown. The interior has some wear and tear and I will need to replace some broken ashtrays and cup holders but I feel that these will keep me nicely occupied for the time being.

Had the car sent down to Piper Racing in Durban to Kumarin to do a fill downpipe and exhaust. I opted for loud and its a straight 76mm ending in a 110mm Jdm style box in the rear. She now growls and farts just right in my opinion. The exhaust really showed me what this motor is all about, power was way up from standard and it made everything smoother, especially gear changes as there was no jerk between changes. Really enjoying its new found power:)

As I said the car came with a few bugs and one of them was the motor was pristine but the original airbox was buggered. I sourced one off a 07 sti hawkeye and fitted that. They are both the same but I just like the fact that it now has an sti part on it :p:rolleyes: I coupled this with an apexi flat panel filter for a quick change over the stock filter. Spool is much better, Motor is smoother and power comes on much cleaner now. I reckon the filter and pipe did a good job of freeing some of that bottled up Japanese power.

I am looking at doing full bracing on the car (Ultra Racing), the coils as mentioned, Forester Sti body parts will be imported as soon as I source a nice bumper, Rear wing and grill. I am not after a show winner but a great all rounder that will provide a little bit of everything. So thats my path that this Forester has taken me down and I must say I absolutely am in love with this crossover. Let me know your thoughts and suggestions...:p

Alex@partz

From what the clued up guys have been saying, a remap must be done after doing the exhaust (specifically the DP)

On the manuals, the front diff uses the same oil as the engine.

Cat in Hat serviced our XT (Auto), used Motul 300v, 10W60 I think.
Guys doing track days use it with good results.

Sorry Dash ,Flew in the Friday morning ,flew back Sunday morning.

Was staying at family and was very difficult to get away from them :) :)
Bought my fozz from a nice lady who complained about it cos the car drive nice when it comes from service and the 2 day later its dead. Had some NF street with me threw it in and to the car with her for a test drive .She was amazed at what the car was capable of doing. Lucky I couriered the car down as I would have ended up replacing HG along the way .My radiator gave in on my doorstep 3 days after she arrived in Cape Town.

That was about a year ago

I like the colour also.  I have two, a 2004 XT colour code called Cayenne Red Pearl and 2007 XS called Garnet Red Pearl.
Photo of XT on the track in Dec and another of both at last weekends dyno day.

Had a thought. Please let me know what you think of this idea and if you have seen another one have the same treatment done. we all know the door cards on the forri have this perforated material at the top and on the arm rests. Im thinking of replacing this with a light grey alcantara suede material.
:p;) Thanks guys

So forum has been down, Ventured over to foresterforum.org and basically reposted my "thead", I must say Forester owners are all great 8). Glad to be back and the forum is looking so much better  ;) Shout out to admins for a good job on that.
Onto the car: The rear plastic trim I cleaned up will not be going back on as guys say they can cause rust. Dont like that shit*RUST*. Next on the list is a set of coilovers(got a set of ISC coils coming in on the 16th for a client for a 05 xt also),Front brake upgrade(Wait to find brembo's + Sti booster), and full bracing(Ultra Racing). Will be ordering the sti kit as soon as our sourcer goes to Japan. Next two months or so. Gonna try get 3 or so jdm grills and a sti front end and rear wing.  :). Let me know if anyones keen on some parts and we can sort them out and ship them all once.

I couldn't agree more. When it comes to offroad, Heights aren't my thing. My brother and I built a caged lada (35' tires, the works) and honestly I use to shit myself when we went up hills and stuff. I prefer tar roads. How does the forester venture on rough terrain? silly question

Very good on sand/mud/dirt roads and can do reasonable inclines but any more than that and you'll get stuck.
Drove all over the farm this past weekend and it was brilliant.

I live on a farm and my driveway can get naughty, this never stopped me running a low mk1. I can imagine they would be awesome on dirt roads and sand. Alot of guys say they eat snow for breakfast too (given you use the correct tires I suspect). Well im open to all forms of forester fun so thanks for the info guys. pic of previous fun bucket

Had the same problem on the farm, the bumper is just a little bit too long. As you've said, it's just going to get scratched again so no use fixing.

hehehe yes well first time I took her out I was really careful and did not scratch it at all
Second time one small scratch

Third a few more and 4'th time proper off roading one I put quite a allot of them on (also would have done reasonable amount of damage if I did not have Loop's sump guard)

Sure np. I got the full setup for 7k. personally the dp is not pretty and this bothers me. I am thinking of building my own and adding a flex joint but will do when I get my tig re gassed and have time. I must tell you these motors are strange, with a straight pipe setup its loud but its not unbearable, and it doesn't drone like I would have expected. :) perfect in between sound as your normally in the 2.5-3 k region with everyday driving, push it more and its like a lions roar.

Update time....
So like most of us in any scene, we know there is the people who have money and there is the people who don't. This is not to say that one man appreciates anything less than the other its just means some go straight to the top of the board because they back their passions up with lots of $$$$. Hey I'm all for both ends of the scale and love both ratty and bling bits as much as the next person. This brings me to my next post which is all about the connections made whilst either being a part of a scene or taking on a personal project. People who may lay their hands on your pride and job may become a very big part of your life and relationships are struck up. I rocked up at Johns house just to have a few looks at the pics taken by Rod and Gareth the other night and obviously got talking on what next to do. So we headed to the garage and opened my engine bay, lone behold I immediately found something that I had wanted to freshen up for a while. We decided to take off rad supports and give them a new lease. John provided the paint and other bits and bobs including the coffee (P88s cold evening),,,,,,score(Thanks bro)So we got the supports off and its visible why I had wanted to give them a fresh lick of paint (Rust!). So got to chill with my mate talk cars and other shit whilst working on Cherry Bomb, and it cost nothing......Lifes good.
Some pics Rod took. Thanks man these are awesome    :-*

Onto the supports

(http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l163/Alexander_Salomon/IMG-20140427-WA0004_zps33a5c463.jpg) (http://s96.photobucket.com/user/Alexander_Salomon/media/IMG-20140427-WA0004_zps33a5c463.jpg.html)

So got sanding and getting all the powdercoat off ready for the rust to be eaten off. Used the old way and soaked the pieces in vinegar and this got rid of the surface rust. Next was to start going to the finer sand papers and smoothing the brackets out nicely and readying them for prime time.

Once primed (2coats), baked, wet sanded and washed they went back in to bake for the first coats of satin black paint(aerosol)

(http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l163/Alexander_Salomon/20140427_221201_zps25be399d.jpg) (http://s96.photobucket.com/user/Alexander_Salomon/media/20140427_221201_zps25be399d.jpg.html)

3 layers were applied with a 3min bake at 100'c once dry to the touch. This ensures that the paint really does create a hard outer surface and assists in the curing process. So here are the supports back on and I think you will agree they came out great. Nice and smooth and the colour laid down awesomely. I will be doing all my little engine brackets like this in the future  ::) 8). Next on the list is a washer kit and to send the bolts for anodizing.

Thanks Sav :)

Thanks Venficus for your kind words. Onto the sticker question: to be completely honest it doesn't bother me in the slightest. I am exactly the same, for example always wash my windscreen as cannot stand the film that builds up on them as well as a crack or bird crap on a screen, these are all things that personally make my driving experience that much worse. pillars come so far in that you can barely make it out from a driving seat position. I opted for it like this as I have seen the centre top and bottom banners and didn't want to remove the function of my wipers. The sticker is not so awesome when the wipers travel over them, leaving streaks etc.

Originally I was going to be putting a set of ISC coilovers on the car and widening the original rims coupled with stretch and camber. I am now looking into a full air setup from K sport, we distribute for them so I think if economically viable I will go this route. this means drop on demand and no destroying my babys underbelly. Previous cars I have enialated due to me slamming the nuts out of them.

Heres the basic kit and it includes struts etc.

I am gonna be doing a whole heap of research this week and bringing the kit over in parts, before I throw a gazillion rands into the setup but I know this is going to be one amazing journey.

Sure looks interesting Alex
Might be quite a lot of fun being able to drop the Forester to WRX ride height with flick of a switch

for long range travel my only question would be how does that kit hold up to bad corrugations.

And then is it still usable if you spring a leak or does the car go lie down on it's belly

Thanks for the response. I plan on the car sitting belly flush once the air is in. Will have to rehug the exhaust for clearance and roll the arch lips. Luckily this isn't my first stance car so I know kinda the limits. As for the air struts, Its basically an air over coil system. The shocks are fully rebuild able and include camber plates for front. with regards to a bag springing a leak, this isn't uncommon but with the right maintenance and correct use I am sure these will last a while. Replacements are like in the 700rand region per bag. Some might say this is expensive but in the bigger picture of things nothings really affordable when moding a car anymore. Spring a leak and the air gauges will let you know immediately plus the side where it has spring a leak will be rendered useless :(.

cool I think it will look great and be loads of fun

The reason why I was asking about the reliability was mostly due to reading a story recently on a recovery that has to be made to the namib desert due to Land rover's one airbag springing a leak
(the guys from toughstuff did the recovery with their truck and trailler)

They were stuck in middle of nowhere so it may just be something to be aware of before hand
maybe do major inspection before taking any long trips for instance

Its funny you say that cos i previously owned a landy (A phase. haha). I actually read the same write up and honestly the land rovers had big issues with their air ride systems, from compressor failures to leaks. I do plan on just making sure I have a decent torch in my boot and a nice triangle just incase. I do worry I will be stranded on the side of the road but as they say no pain no gain. Its worth a try :).

No intention what so ever. I have my farm bukkie to do the hauling of any shit from a-b and the fathest id want to go was down to my pond at the bottom of the farm. The old ford ranger does the trick. I dont have to travel on dirt roads but I am just not prepared to destroy my cars underbelly in the quest of stance. Ill get her dialed with the air and have 3 settings. std height, low drive and on the floor.

Will be ordering this next week. In the meantime oil change and filter change. Apologies for the lack of updates  :-[

These are awesome stories and guys wherever you traveled to get your foz Im sure there are no regrets. Car gets logged and tuned today. A friend I went to school use to do subaru and vag fault finding and remapping. Should see around 160-170 fly kw I presume. As for future motor mods Ill just be going with a recirculating BOV and leave it at that. Then its onto suspension, rims, breaks and body. Struck up a deal with a forester owner for his forester mk1 bumper add on(Not sure of the name), This is off the model with the big lights. I will be building it to fit the mk2 front. Should get interesting  ::) ;D
As I have said before Im not in a rush so Ill take my time to get the right things I want  ;D

Yep, I've been in Musashi's 2006 XT - decat & tune only @ 0.85 bar. Felt WAY stronger than my 169kw one. If I had to guess I'd say closer to 190-200kw.

Title: Re: My Foz 2.5xt Man

Well you need to take into account the difference in gearbox ratios too

The pre 06 models had slightly shorter gear ratio's compare to the 06+
which meant that they were close to but maybe slightly quicker off the line as standard even though they were bit down on power
bad part is they used but more fuel due to having to run higher RPM's at same speed
So a tuned one should feel quite a bit more lively

average from what I have read the guys are getting about 30Kw more out and quite a reasonable amount of torque
so 155KW one can probably do 180 KW- 190KW or so

that said if you decat and tune it for 170KW then it could be reasonably light on fuel

Yep, this was an auto though. Manual should be even better.

I think he's mentioned he's tried a low boost map before but it didn't make much if any difference to fuel cons. The trick is probably to find the "sweet spot" between performance and fuel cons.

on a tdo4 with a 76mm turbo back exhaust you can expect about 185 to 190 on the fly
Title: Re: My Foz 2.5xt Man

So had the car logged today under load. Showing some scary timing corrections and fuel scaling problems amongst other issues. Between top end and medium throttle the scaling is all off with +-3.5 deg timing advance in some stages and between idle and 2500 its showing timing retards of up to 3.5 deg. So when i did the log runs I was actually able to take into account how bad the overall scaling and smoothness of the power was. Boost comes in quickly and is soon met by a the ecus afr which has obviously pegged at its max or min(+15/-15) values so is unable to correct applicably. Tomorrow we will Flash the ecu with its new settings then log the car. Lets hope there are no hardware problems. :). We will be offering reflashes soon as we plan on going into business with this tuner.  8)

Have an awesome public holiday and happy voting everyone

Got the car remaped last night and all I can say is WOW. Its unbelievable the smoothness of the power delivery now. No more surging into and out of boost, no more timing correction. All I will be doing next is a fuel filter change, oil change with 10w 60 liqui moly synth and a bottle of ceratech and lastly a Maf sensor clean. Logging the car again tomorrow to see the ect has learnt everything correctly but so far so good. Now I know what Subaru power feels like  8). Will load all data once I recieve it. Thanks all

Some awesome new toys there!!!

Got a sway bar yet? Decided to remove my 24mm Whiteline rear sway bar because it's not really suited to the farm roads.

Yep, and that's usually the case - you think you will never need something again and then one day you do. I guess I'd need to do some non-scientific testing between the two first.  ::)

I had to upgrade the chassis and sway bar mounts to the newer WRX ones to fit this thing but funny enough the stock rubber bushes still fit so it's a quick & easy job swapping them around now.
I'll let you know if I do decide to sell though.

So got home as the sun was setting but the bug bit so I threw my bags inside the house and jacked the other side up of the car and got cleaning. I cannot stress how dirt hurts my heart and brain  :(. I usually do a two stage clean here and this gets the arches nice and clean again.....Important if you want to keep corrosion down to a min and your suspension in working order. We will be offering this to our clients when our shop opens up. We arent gonna go with the paint correction route but rather get that underbody and its components back to life and sparkly again :)

Ok so heres a little update. So without getting all upset, it doesnt include any new parts but a whole bunch of cleaning. OCD :( In between three businesses I battle to find time, so when the opportunity arrises I grab it with both hands. My cars underbody is back to how it rolled off the showroom. 9 odd years of build up and its evident that this car was never driven on the beaten track. :) 8) YAY. No offence to the dirt hungry foz owners :P

So I got cleaning

Alright so here is a little update. I have been cleaning the underside of my car and im half way through that. The underside is spotless and I can now see just how well these cars are constructed. In between the piping, gas tank, exhaust and all other obstacles I managed fine with a little high pressure, elbow grease and an array of cleaning tools. So on the drive home today the bug bit....... Previously I had talked suede interior inserts on some of the panels, well with a close match colour wise I decided to bite the bullet and dive in face first. Please note previous owner obviously had a hungry dog or vicious child as this piece had some bite marks in it. I did my best to hide these without going nuts.

As always they needed a clean :P My FAVORITE ;D

Thanks sav. its a thin top level foam. If you apply pressure to one spot, over time this will destroy all its fibres and become flat. Id suggest going and getting some new foam and giving this a bash. Very rewarding :)

Got down to the grindstone again tonight. I roped my mom into helping me with the sewing part, was great fun Moms are the best ;D. Alright so I stripped the shifter boot and decided to suede it up and get creative <3 I believe the outcome was reasonable for a first attempt.

(http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l163/Alexander_Salomon/for30_zps690448a8.jpg) (http://s96.photobucket.com/user/Alexander_Salomon/media/for30_zps690448a8.jpg.html)

I traced it out and trimmed it to where I thought it should be. Popped by moms and she got her sewing machine out. BEST :-*

Put all the couplings back together and got it all buttoned up. Looks sweet. Test fit time... :D

That is a damn good looking first attempt.

Does anyone know if the manual shifter boot template is the same size as the Auto on an SH.
I want to replace the Auto setup with a manual boot.
Between wife and son, there's a lot of crap getting in under the plate.

I fear my clutch may be slipping.. if I jump on the gas in third I can feel slippage. Called subaru and for all the parts its coming in at around R4200, bearings and all. I think this is an ok price? my clutch has 155 000km on it, unless its been changed.... Whats everyones view on this? its only slipped twice but I am thinking this is a good a time as ever to attend to this problem........ comments welcome  :-[ btw Dash says I should remove my turbo as I never use it  :'(
Title: Re: My Foz 2.5xt Man
Post by: sav on June 17, 2014, 01:15:22 PM
That is a very good price but I'm assuming it excludes the flywheel? Not sure if it's dual mass or not, but that could add another R7k as it can't be skimmed. Maybe it's time for an upgraded clutch and solid flywheel if you're planning on making big power? But then Dash said you're not using your turbo so no need I guess? :D

Don't feel too bad - engine rebuild right after buying my car wasn't fun.

Mine was on the floor for a couple minutes after fitting the coilovers, does that count? :D

Rebuild was not cheap but I was luckily pointed in the right direction so the workmanship was great.

That, and the thought that you could have bought a new reasonable-ish vehicle for R5K per month but after say the first 6 months that the engine build would have bought you...you've got to drive that vehicle every day!

I agree. Yeah I was shocked at the price honestly. The guy I bought it from had bought 50 cars and this was it that bunch. Look I know you'll never get book value on these cars on a bad day but I knew I had gotten a sweetish deal. think its price was marked down cos it had a few little dings and scratches. So I told the guy to throw a few repairs in and we got a done deal. This was before cor, he had to put 4 new tyres on her and cv boots in order for it to pass inspection. I smiled as I think I may have just walked away with a little bonus. I am finding keeping the exterior of these cars clean is hell. Gonna be adding 2 washing days to one of my workers chores list in order to keep her clean. HMF

LUCKY!!!

Not easy keeping it clean and I bet you'd cry after seeing what it looks like after a weekend in the bush. :D I've accepted it like that so a scratch here and there doesn't bother me anymore, it's not a show car and was bought for a purpose. Now my daily on the other hand - if that got scratched I'd probably cry.   :'(

Thanks! Yeah I thought I loved it and then I took it to Zwartkops. Now I want it to have my babies! :D

Not the most practical and that's where the Forester comes in - loads of space, doesn't mind the farm roads plus it's a lot of fun.

Haha thanks. In my defense the BRZ wasn't launched yet when I bought. :D But I still would have bought the 86. Flame suit on. :o
Title: Re: My Foz 2.5xt Man
Post by: Alex on June 18, 2014, 11:26:56 AM
No defense needed. The 86 is cheaper (if I'm not mistaken) and exactly the same, and judging by what I hear from some Subaru after sales services I think your choice is in your favor.

Gonna be importing some grey hides from Argentina for a friends car. He has a whole bunch of pillars he wants done etc. I was looking at the camel suede for my interior and once I receive these new hides I will decide whether or not to redo mine. Learning curve but I am really loving this upholstery stuff. Will be working on some new stitching etc and hopefully learn to stitch steering wheels.

Yep, BRZ is more expensive and the only real difference is maintenance plan vs service plan and the performance exhaust which I've bought from them anyway.

Now you just need to do the roof lining!
If you thought the handbrake is difficult, I did my wife's first car, an Opel Kadett, gearboot, handbrake and roof lining in blue denim.
Looked stunning, and lasted very well.
I actually had the roof lining fabric embroidered beforehand with stars - looked really cool!

SAV you could most likely wrap the centre console with vinyl stickers - if carefull it could look very good and then be good protection for the original finish. I am still considering wrapping the silver trim on my SH dashboard with matt black. I have already bought the stickers, but still not sure whether I should do it!

Pieter I will not go there yet :( hahah my foor line is lakka but that suede finish on there would kill. Centre consol to get right will be hard. That lettering will be covered

So Ive been bitching and moaning about a slipping clutch. So got myself an Exedy clutch plate, Exedy pressure plate, thrust bearing and some other bearing for changing. I am also looking at doing the head gaskets, new plugs, oil and fuel filter and the cambelt with runners.Whilst the motor is out I may as well do this and the gearbox, diff and engine oils. should be done next week :P whilst its in the workshop the engine bay will be cleaned and detailed along with the engine. Some bits I picked up today. :P

Absolutely, changing the head gaskets means skimming the heads and you don't want to do that if you don't have to- both from a cost perspective plus you've only got 2 skims until you're sitting with a problem and you don't know for sure if your heads have been skimmed already.

Put the gaskets on the shelf and start saving for forged internals for "one day".

ok so its been a while. I hope you still all remember me..... My reasons of absence....Subaru isn't giving away parts so I have been working overtime in order to get my little bits done here and there $$$$$$
I had acquired all my parts as previously mentioned and I got Ashley o do the spannering as Boxers scare me and I don't feel like braking shit. A list of what went down whilst the car was with Ashley
*got a turbo smart dump valve fitted (Crack boom ptshhh. I dig)
*Full oil changes, diffs, gearbox and engine- all liquid molly (The good stuff :) )
*Tappet gaskets and plug gaskets were swapped for fresh items
*radiator and cooling side received some fresh coolant
*Windscreen wipers were swapped for the soft new looking ones (What a difference)
*Oil filter was changed for a Subaru item
*motor pulled out and given some soapy love, Looking much fresher
*Engine bay was washed and given some love too.
*clutch, pressure plate, release bearing and flywheel bearing (Exeddy)
*Cam belt, timing belt, aircon and alternator belts all changed
*all the timing belt guids as well as the tensioner were swapped for fresh items.
*Ngk R1 plugs were bolted in for some fresh spark

Next on the list is a Mishi or Koyo radiator but that's after the coils get here in the next week or so. Then Brembo brakes and possibly headers :D
The car is running amazingly well and it farts just right now, gear changes are smooth and it boosts really smooth, A huge Thank You To Ashley, you did the job amazingly well and were so helpful. I did run an engine warning light on the way home but I suspect running lean on the one bank. I love this foz. and I cannot wait for it to be slammed. :)
Whilst I was waiting for the funds to get all this done I found something to do.
The rear roller was buggered (Aluminium frame) so I straightened it and got the dents sorted and suede wrapped it to match my interior. (Don't have a finished pic :( )

Looking good!!!

Wish my engine bay was that clean. One thing I still want to do is to paint those green/brownish metal covers by the injectors.
Any backfiring after fitting the dump valve, or is it adjustable?

BTW.
At least my engine is clean.:D

Reset ECU after fitting aftermarket BOV

ecu reset and remap tonight. car runs insane
Looking good!!!

Wish my engine bay was that clean. One thing I still want to do is to paint those green/brownish metal covers by the injectors.
Any backfiring after fitting the dump valve, or is it adjustable?

BTW.
At least my engine is clean.:D

Got the car plugged in last night and pulled the error code. It was lean somewhere on the system, with a bit of looking around and fault finding we narrowed it down to a vacuum pipe at the top of the dump valve. Got that tightened, flashed the ecu and the car runs stronger then ever. no lights on and the boost is awesome. Had a chat with Ashley today and have asked him to put his Tomei exhaust headers aside for me, I think a proper induction and headers and possibly check and clean the injectors is in order.

So not alot of activity on this thread so I thought I would do a little update.
Rims are sold so thats something new and my coilovers will be in this week. The original Enkei rims are really growing on me,,,, and heck they enkei so whats not to like about that...... A blouch Tdo5 20g is sitting in my garage so that will go into the foz after the suspension is done. I apologize for dropping the ball somewhat with regards to this thread but just letting everyone know I am still in the loop :). I have also been very busy on my new garage so that will be up an running soon. Have hired a Subaru mechanic so will be going at it full force :). New company will be advertised on here as soon as everything is up and running :D

I have been quiet on here as things just get busier and busier; anyways I managed to spend a day or two on the Forester and managed to get her grounded. All is setup and I am just trying to find the right height. Currently the front is sitting awesome but the rear needs another cm and a half down and then they will be even. Other than this the ride is absolutely amazing. I have added a few pics and I hope everyone digs. Oh and the Oem rims actually look awesome. They need spacing and a new lick of paint but they are fresh :). The tow bar needs to go this week as its a complete eyesore.  (BTW the coils still have another 7 cm of drop in them +-)

Hahaha @Sav thanks for the kind words. I have raised it a lot as the first three setups were way to ambitious for 17" Rims. :( The ride is completely out of this world and I feel like im more on the level I like and love. Next is as you say turbo, fuel pump, injectors and a few other goodies. But Im in no real rush  8)

A big turbo is not really suited to our low ratio 1st and even 2nd gears. You have to be wide awake when changing because it's brutal when it hits 4,000rpm and 6,500rpm is up in the blink of an eye. I've never been a robot racer but the few times I've had some fun off the line a Forester with a smaller turbo has been huge fun and a hot hatch killer because of quick spool up and the small turbo's boost drop after 5,500rpm making the change point precisely and easily repeatable every time. It also gets away very quickly with a launch on the 5 speed box not being too harsh.

With a 20G it can be a bit of a lottery and it requires concentration- no enjoying the expression on the GTI driver's face! Plus it's harsher on components. So if you're a drag queen  :D I wouldn't recommend it unless you're going the whole hog with the STi box, then you can hammer it all day long. I've been in an STi with a 20G turbo and launch control- the shock waves that 'box tolerates at launch is astounding.

Related to the above, the tuner who tuned my Forester limited boost in 1st and 2nd gear to help protect the motor but you can't do this with an open source tune (problem 2) so you'll need to pay attention even more. An STi 6 speed DCCD box would be the answer but that's $ to do.

Lag is also not great on the TD06 20G. Your TDO5 will be better than mine Alex but my reading says the 18G with the right sized billet wheel hits the sweet spot on our Foresters. Many testimonies to that on SubaruForester.org, I still may go that route one day.

On the upside, 3rd gear through to 5th gear is astounding with a 20G. Very naughty, but astonishingly fast. I'm leaving octane booster out the tank now to discourage me from doing that often. ;D

Which then begs the question, why go more than a well tune VF turbo with all the supporting bits?

One thing a 20G makes you realise is the aerodynamics on the SG Foresters are not nearly as bad as I assumed. I imagined 4th and 5th gear acceleration in a stock XT to be hampered by a wall of air against our brick-like shapes, but when you give it stick in 5th with a 20G and then tap off, speed is shed slowly even with my big scoop and 255 tyres. Not 911 slowly of course but nothing like I would have expected.

Thanks for that Dash!
I have the VF43 and will probably stay there for a while still. Next port of call would be brakes as it is mind blowing how quickly the Forester gets to silly speeds and then you battle to haul it back.
I am looking forward to FFS being installed by Chett soon. That will make gear changes a whole lot easier.

Sounds like I've chosen a sensible path that won't kill me. :D

Big brakes(thanks first owner) --> forged rebuild --> coilovers/suspension --> zorst/decat/tune --> cooling --> VF/intercooler/tune

TD06-18G with 8cm hotside wheel as I recall got resounding applause from the Forester guys in the States. This was 2 years ago and things move on quickly with turbo technology.

16G is too small, better for the 2.0L for all round use.

;D Love talking turbos. Always learning things. Ok so gonna be working on the Foz tonight hopefully bring the rear down one cm and add some 9mm spacers to check how that tucks. Loving the way the car is handling with the coils. So responsive and holds the road like a monster. Rear wheel bearings need a check as I suspect one is on its way as I hear a whine from the rear. Anyone know how difficult it is changing these? I assume the whine is not dif related as the oils have just been changed in the rear and no fragments were found. If it is the dif however I may just cry :'(.

OK, so I must just add this in to be fair to the TD06-20G.

I went for a breakfast run on Sunday and popped in bottle of NF with full intention to hoon it properly. It's the first time I drove the new Foz in anger and my goodness it shunts! When you rev it properly to just before red line your next gear change finds you inside the boost zone again so there's no disappointment inbetween. I tend to change early in normal road driving, even when giving it a bit of wellie, and that's where it doesn't feel right.

So it's a black and white turbo- stay off boost mostly for everyday driving and the Foz will return semi-decent fuel consumption on pump fuel with some backup power to 0.8 bar boost if provoked. That'll be enough to see off a stock GTi/ST/etc.

Stay in boost with octane booster and it turns into a ballistic missile.

I'm warming to it.

Just Pierre and myself up to Ballito, brekkie at Umhloti then back. He wanted to benchmark his RS4 after the decat, decoke and remap and we needed to talk about plans for Half Pint.

Got tinkering on the wagon today. I must say having a fresh new work area is such a treat. My brother pulled by to help me clap a few beers as well as do some spanner work (Family Fun). Got the rain tray off and it was scary. I have been putting this piece off as I knew it would be an all day affair. I got the clips and all other connecting things off and decided to get stuck in. I cleaned it properly with steam, soaps and brushes etc. and finally finished with polishing the bodywork prior to replacing all the newly cleaned and oiled covers etc. I did give the motor a little wash but nothing hectic. I was so glad not to find any rust as this was my fear but it was full of a lot of other crap. Anyways I will just dump a few pics and you guys can tell me what you think.   8)

The tuck looks better from the last angle as you can see the whole setup needs spacing and camber.

Workshop is a two car space and has two other connected rooms. The walls have been gutted and repainted as well as all new electricals. I dig this space and the fresh coats of paint have given this garage a new life. Oh and the floors were epoxy coated.

There is literally no room between anything inside these bays, I tried my best to get as much kak out and a few hours later I don't think I did such a bad job :)

yep... stunning. Lowered, raised, I love them all.
That cleanliness is putting us all to shame, though.  Wish I had the time - and the patience!

What is patience? Can you buy it?

I've gone from stock to where it's at now in about 9 months.  ;D

You don't REALLY need two kidneys.

Guys your comments are awesome. Gives me huge confidence for the next things I have planned. Keep your kidneys and body parts and hopefully me working on my car gives you guys that confidence to get your foz's clean as. :) had a crazy drive to ct on thursday and I will never do that again

thanks guys. I had a long drive to ct on Thursday. Managed to do it in roughly 23 hours. Went down to see family etc and drove back up on Monday but decided to rather take it over two days on return. All I wished for was to have my Forester as was driving the Merc. Forester would have been awesome in the Karoo. 8) Should have taken a plane
