Wheels, Tires and Brakes. / Re: Changing Tyre Size back to stock
« on: September 16, 2019, 09:47:51 PM »
Where do you plan on going with the car?

I went down in size from 17s to 16s for several reasons:
Better deflation for sand
A higher sidewall gives more comfort on gravel
16s are quite a bit cheaper than 17s
More tyre options available in 16”

I’ve found that the G015s are pretty quiet on tar and give good predictable grip. On gravel they excel.

I had the Yoko G95s too (225/60 17s). Fitted in wheel well without issue.
Then changed to 215/65 16s with Yoko G015s - great on gravel and dirt roads and not too shabby on tar either.
Done Tankwa a few times without issues.

Also, 16s are almost R1k cheaper than the equivalent 17 size...

Had a similar issue on my SH after changing the power steering belt. Adjusting tension sorted it for a while but is now slightly noticeable again on cold start. Perhaps belt has stretched a tiny amount again?

Agree with all that Bernd has said.
These cars are tough as nails, comfortable on tar and gravel and off the beaten track, but get horribly abused in places where other vehicles have low range to get through or over.

Best investments for me so far were:
1. Alu sump guard (Loopsoosstroop / Pieter on forum)
2. Downgrade to 16” rims to fit AT tyres with a higher profile
3. Front runner roof rack for extra space

Next would be Alu radiator conversion for piece of mind and a 1” spaced lift kit

These cars are super capable and will take you many places in luxury that others can’t, but bear in mind they are an SUV and not a bakkie ito space and over landing capabilities.

Closest dealer would be in Plumstead (Subaru Southern suburbs branch), else Tableview.
Pyro Performance is in Noordhoek - excellent service there too

I found myself in a similar situation, and here’s what I did:
Bought a set of 16” rims and fitted G015s.

Pros: Awesome on dirt, sand and gravel, good tar grip, a little squeal if you thump it on corners, quiet ride, more comfort over  bumps due to higher sidewall.

Cons: not much - perhaps a bit less grip in the wet and some talk of increased noise as the tyre wears low, it did affect corner handling a bit which I recon is due to my higher profile (65 vs 60)

15k km later I’m still a happy chappie.

Welcome to my world. 2010 XS Auto: town @ 12,5l/100;  open road 10-10,5l/100. But that’s with AT Tyres and roofrack fitted

Wheels, Tires and Brakes. / Another tyre help please
« on: January 07, 2019, 04:39:19 PM »
Another option.. find some 16” Steelies, then the price per tyre drops by almost R1k. Going from 225/60r17 to 215/65r16 is only a 3% smaller size so minimal clearance drop.

I changed from 17” G95s to 16” G015s.
G015s have been great on dirt and sand and allow for better deflation off tar. Not too noisy either. And they look nice and chunky.

Blocked catalytic converters perhaps? Have you scanned for codes?
