General Chat / Re: Failed Radiator Issues (Poll)

How do you manage (only) 170k on a 2003 Fozzie?
it's not a Landy, so it's not in the workshop all the time.
Is it only a weekend car? :D  :D
It's never been an only car - we've always had 3 or 4 cars.
My wife's 2004 Impreza 2.5RS is even worse - it's only done 90,000 kms :)

Well, I guess I've been living on borrowed time, and today that time ran out...
My radiator failed.    A hairline crack, but under pressure it leaked quite a lot.
Fortunately I spotted it quickly with only minor overheating, and I don't think (hope) that I've got any secondary damage, but we'll see.
Also fortunately, it was only about 3 kms from my tame tech's workshop, so a water top-up and a gentle and careful drive got it there with temps reading normal.

2003 Forester 2.5XT (SG), 12 years old and 170,000 trouble-free kms (except rear shocks), so I'm not complaining.
Pity though, because I had other plans for the bucks it'll take to fix it :(

Here's the example(s) I promised.  Two very short clips.

The first video is cold tyres oversteer.
At Midvaal, due to mixing it with racecars, you gotta get your butt moving from the get-go, so I leave the nannies on for the 1st lap, and let it slide around to warm up the brakes and the tyres quickly.

The second video is a push understeer example at Red Star.
My car's hooked up there.  No matter how much power I put down, it won't oversteer.
The understeer just gets more, but it's easy to modulate using throttle.

Cool, -1.5 front and rear?
Rear is 100% stock, but with sticky tyres, the harder you load up the rear suspension, the more negative it goes - that's how the rear geometry works.
Check out the photo how the rear wheel stays vertical despite major body roll.
Ideally I'd like to have -2.5 to -3.0 front, and if that means more at the back to balance it out, then I'll have to do LCAs.

I think it's to do with grip levels.  On cold tyres or in the wet, my car oversteers badly, but with hot semis the back end hooks up beautifully.  I can go WOT in 2nd exiting a tight hairpin, and the back will stay hooked up with the power causing push understeer.   Makes it safe and easy to drive because I can control the understeer with the throttle.   By "hot semis" I mean very hot - they've got to be howling and RE11S's need serious abuse to make them howl.

I'm running stock suspension and stock alignment except for crash bolts which give me -1.5

Based on research I've done recently into prices of parts comparing Subaru and Toyota, I've found Subaru about 40% cheaper.
So don't be surprised if you see some Subaru badges on my 86 soon  8)

It's horses for courses...

I bought the standard spec 86 because I don't want all that stuff like heated seats, etc.   The only things I miss are cruise control and a digital speedo (which I've overcome with a tablet).

What I really don't understand is why Subaru wanted the BRZ to have more understeer.   I don't find the 86 oversteery at all.  On track, I battle with understeer and need to find a way to reduce understeer.   Wonder if it's my fat ass that changes the balance of the car and makes it understeer? LOL

That sounds better.

I'm surprised and confused by the high headlight costs.
@sav as you've probably seen on the FT86 forum, I've been raving about how cheap Subaru BRZ parts are compared to the equivalent Toyota part - about 40% cheaper!!

Here's the video...
It's not every day that you get to see a Forester giving two STIs a hard time.
Sit back and enjoy.

I intentionally let the video run until I went into the pits - just to show you something.
You probably thought that the two STIs and the turbo Sentra pulled over to cool down and go into the pits.
Ummm, nope.  Watch what goes by as I pull in.
You actually intimidated them into submission.  I'd call that a victory - well done  8)

BTW - next time I'm near you on track, I would love to jump in for a ride in the SC86 ;D
Sure, my pleasure.
I'll upload the video shortly.

If you're interested, this was my fastest lap on Sunday which got me 9th place overall in the Michelin Cup event.

It was wonderful seeing two Fozzies on track on Saturday.
A big thank you for supporting the Pet Rescue charity :)

I've got some great dashcam video footage of an XT giving two STIs a hard time taken while I was playing track taxi with my 86.
As a true blue Forester guy, I loved watching the show, and gave up trying to pass - it was more fun just spectating  8)
Well done, you know who you are.
If you're OK to have the video on this forum, then let me know, and I'll upload it.

the 2.5 turbo motor is really a ticking time bomb in every sense of the word

Phew, why do you say that?

Mine is 12 years old, been hammered from day one,  and never missed a beat...

Fish I have an idea
Buy the Subaru BRZ shocks and springs then fit them and take them for a test drive then let us know which is nicest :)
Sure.  PM your credit card number  ;D
